Announcement: Letter to Santa Contest at Trotsdale

The Library is running a writing competition again finally. This time you can thank Milo as the idea to write letters to Santa was his, and he has generously donated a sizable prize to start the prize pool. Details and instructions are in the attached card. It is open to everyone so feel free to pass a copy to your friends.

Uh oh! Christmas is coming, that goose is looking pretty tasty, there are lights and things going up, undercover elves spying on us all a lot more noticably and not even in stealth mode anymore. It must be time to write that letter to Santa!

1) There is ONE prize. Send in the best letter and you take home the prize.
2) The rating is G. G-rated content only.
3) Notecards must have both your SL LEGACY NAME and your CHOSEN PEN NAME. Display names change too often, legacy names stay.
4) All submissions must be set on full perm notecards and placed in the scroll case drop box on the library table.
5) Copies of this rule card can be picked up from the inkwell in the library table if needed.
6) These entries will be archived on the library forum. They will also be read in a video placed on Youtube for the library's audio archiving. This is why if you don't want your SL Legacy name out there it is important to have a pen name chosen.

Amehana Ishtari and Milo (decitrex) are the judges. If a tiebreaker is needed they will enlist a third judge that is not competing.

The contest prize pool currently is 1,038$L started off with the first donation being ponied up by Milo (decitrex). It may increase depending on any donations received (please send those to Hanaarashi Resident, who is the contest bank account/alt of Amehana Ishtari) or through the pile of books on the library table.

Survivors of Suicide

We all feel down at times. But some of us have real problems falling into and staying in dark moods. Depression can be crippling, and can lead to a final end: suicide. Suicide is a major form of death, with tens of thousands in America and almost a million worldwide taking their own lives despite it being against practically every major religion and philosophy. Fortunately, there are numerous organizations and groups devoted to helping those at risk. In Second Life, one such group is the "Survivors of Suicide." It has moved on to help anyone or friends of someone with depression, but it was created for those who either attempted suicide, those at risk of it, or friends and family of them. The Newser recently sat down with the current head of the group, Sebastien Bouevier, and he talked about Survivors of Suicide and what it does.

A Gacha Garden for Littles

Gachas can be a lot of fun. And by all means it's not just full-sized avatars that enjoy them. Those who prefer child avatars like them just as much, unless they have a lot of items they can't use such as clothes too big to fit them. Fortunately for them, there's the Little Diva Gacha Garden. This is a gacha designed with child avies in mind, and have some items the grown-ups can use as well. Alura Denver took a look to see what was available.

Who Will Be The Newser's Man (or Woman) of The Year

In real life news, Time Magazine just announced their Man of the Year, or rather "Persons of the Year," known as "The Silence Breakers." This is an annual tradition of theirs going back since they first gave the title to Charles Lindbergh in 1927, the man, woman, or sometimes group of people or object, whom they feel had the most impact in the news in the past year for good or ill. While often seen as a badge of honor, the title has on occasion gone to some villainous figures such as Joseph Stalin and Ayatollah Khomeini. And once in a while it goes to an object, such as the computer.

But what about Second Life? Who here has had the most significant impact in the news about the virtual world?

There's been no shortage of news in the past year from the release of Sansar, to noted residents to departed the Grid, to charity groups such as the Relay for Life, to the plans by the FCC to repeal Net Neutrality which could be potentially very bad for Second Life, and more.

This will be the fourth time the Newser has given the title. In 2014, the new CEO of Linden Lab Ebbe Linden was the Man of the Year. In 2015, the residents of Steelhead were the Community of the Year. And in 2016, the title was given to the Relay for Life in Second Life.

So who do you the readers think made the most difference in the news in Second Life this year? Please leave us your opinions below.

Monticito Bay

BekNos (Becky Nosferatu) and Moff (MoffettMephit Resident) invited me to a new sim they and others have been working on: Monticito Bay. Built to resemble a coastal resort city of the American South in the mid-20th Century, there was quite a bit there, from store areas, to rentals, to venues, room for special events, and much scenery, a couple with small stories as to how they got started.

EA's Star Wars Battlefront II's "Lootboxes" Stir Controversy, Calls For Government Regulation

It used to be if we paid money to play a game, whether all at once for a console game or monthly for an MMO, that was it. If a game was free to play, that the makers would offer a few items to make gameplay easier for a few bucks was accepted. So what happens when a game noted for it's multiplayer mode with player versus player combat, which you have to pay sixty to eighty dollars to play to begin with, starts offering people the chance to buy the loot boxes needed to advance? A lot of controversy, comparisons to online gambling, and talk of the government getting involved.

Sunweaver Eclipse Freezes Over

Winter has come to the Sunweaver Estates. Shockwave Yareach, a noted builder with accomplishments such as various Relay Weekend campsites, who owns Sunweaver Eclipse informed the Newser the place had recently taken on a look of ice and snow, suggesting it was not exactly deliberate, "My freeze ray has rendered my hot tropical island a winter wonderland. Had a we bit o trouble with the liquid nitrogen. Sadly the ray was supposed to defrost hot dogs.  But oh well."

Dropping by, the sea around the island was indeed iced over.  One could walk around the place without falling through to the sea floor. Perfect for skating, if one had some skates. The ice extended to the SunWater Three sim, so one could walk or skate between the two islands, or north of the larger one. The middle of the Eclipse island also had some snow, and some winterized and Christmas trees, as well as some decorations.

But this wasn't all. Later Shockwave messaged me of a new development out of a "Calvin and Hobbes" comic plot, "Oh no!!  Roving snowgoons have invaded my sim!!" It turned out he wanted to see what would happen if he put a little code in some snowmen. But the results, not unlike with Calvin, didn't exactly go to plan as he now had a mess of scary snowmen crawling around, "Now they roam my sim."

So to get a look at the Sunweaver Estate's wintry corner, snowgoons and all, head to the Sunweaver Eclipse sim.

Oahu Sim, Home of USS Arizona Memorial, "Under Construction"

Going to the USS Arizona Memorial at the Oahu sim turned out to be a no-go yesterday as the sim was closed to the public. The reason, it was "Under Construction." Having an alt join the group, the place should be reopened on December 9 to a "Grand Opening" party.

As it turns out, Oahu has a couple neighbors now, and the memorial can be seen from the
Pacific West sim by turning the draw distance way up, panning around, and waiting for the image to clear up. But stepping onto the Oahu sim will result in a warning to get off or be teleported away.

Beginning on December 9 presumably, the memorial can be found at Oahu (176/22/23). The reproduction of the real-life memorial to those who lost their lives on the USS Arizona on the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese Empire. About half of the over 2300 killed in the attack perished on the ship. The memorial was online for several years, including for a Pearl Harbor 70th Anniversary memorial event in 2011. The sim would be down for several months last year until it was reopened in January this year.

On Saturday December 2, There was a Trans-Siberian Orchestra tribute band performance at the Relay for Life's Christmas Expo. DJ Geerkil And The "Dragon Crew"

There are plenty of DJs in Second Life. But how many are in teams, which include a dragon, or have some comedic banter between tunes? At the Happy Vixen and Club Zero Gravity in the Sunweaver community, you'll find DJ Geerkil and the "Dragon Crew. Geerkil Zisky and JB Raccoon spin out great music and a funny banter between songs, with their friend LS Raccoon acting as host (their Tuesday set's host is Kitacella), they perform events at these two clubs. Press Release: The 2017 Christmas Expo and Winter Breedables Fair Snowman Contest

Yes of course you want to join the the Snowman Contest, I knew that !
Now, you are now almost ready to go!

First step, pay a Vendor to claim a spot, entry fee is 350L$.

ATTENTION: unlike before, this year the vendors will not self-destruct.
Please make sure that you check the hover text above the vendor.

Line 3 should read: This Vendor's sales: L$0

That means this lot has not been taken. If the Line says: This Vendor's sales: L$350, someone has already picked that spot.

But don't worry, just pick another one. Also, additional spots can be added.

After you paid the vendor, you can start building your snowman, or, if you already constructed it somewhere else, place it here.

The rules are simple:

- You must stay within a limit of 30 prims (or rather...  Land Impact), exceeding that limit will result in point deduction

- Your snowman must be ready by the 6th of December (means, it must be in your building spot, judging starts December 7)

- Transfer perms are NOT required. That means you can use anything within the 30 LI to make your snowman pretty and unique , you may however not use a prefab snowman for obvious reasons. Create a unique scenery by adding your personal touch.

The voting system:
Judges will vote in 3 categories and can give 15 points at a max.

But here is the clue... another 15 can be granted by popular vote. So make all your friends come and vote for your Snowman by donating to the kiosk right next to it.

Points from jury and popular vote combined will decide the winner !

The Winner will be announced during the Holiday of Hope Ball on December 10th.

Missing Items, Missing Lindens

By: Alura Denver (Alura Messing)

For over a week now Second Life has been having an issue with Marketplace.  Today they posted a similar update to previous alerts, saying "we are still actively investigating".  They are however, only reporting that there "is an issue causing no-copy items to become unlisted".  What is not being shared however, is that the transaction will still be processed taking your lindens and not giving you any merchandise.  Additionally, Marketplace will have no record of the transaction ever happening.  You will only be able to find the transaction in your account transactions on the main Second Life Web page.  Residents have also reported that these transactions come out multiple times, taking money each time.

Should you find yourself the unlucky person that this happens to before it is resolved, you can submit a support ticket at https://lindenlab.freshdesk.com/support/tickets/new  be sure to include as much information as possible.  Remember it can take Linden Labs up to a week to process tickets.  If you want to know more about the status of this issue you can check the grid status and issues at https://status.secondlifegrid.net/ for any updates that have been posted.

Linden Lab's Winter Wonderland Returns, Date Set for "Snowball Showdown"

On Wednesday November 29, Xiola Linden posted of the official Second Life blog that their "Winter Wonderland" area, accessible from Portal Park, was once again open. Attractions there include the Village of Lights, the Winter Snow Track, the Ice Skate Arena, the Ferris Wheel, and the favorite of most: the Snowball Fight Arena.

Also announced was the date of a Second Life tradition: the time of the "Snowball Showdown," or the "Linden Snowball Fight" as it used to be called.

Holidays have traditions - the gathering of families, the giving of gifts, the food and merriment, and - in our case - the Linden/Resident Snowball Showdown! This is your chance to arm yourself with some sweet snow-slinging artillery, take to the sparkling ice, and attack your friends, fellow Residents, and some Lindens with snowballs galore! But, you had better be prepared to get pummeled in return, because much of the joy of the holidays is giving - even if that means giving someone a snowball sandwich when they are least expecting it. Join us at the Snowball Fight Arena on Friday - December 15th from 11 am to 1 pm (SLT) and prepare to get pummeled!

"Welcome to Mike’s Chem Lab!" by Mike Shaw

Special thanks to Chantal and Jes for setting up this corner of the SC sim with buildings, comfy places to sit and other attractive features. Feel free to hang out with the cats.

The area features objects built for talks I’ve given during the past couple of years during the Science Circle’s (SC) regular lecture series.  More information about the SC is available on the website, including links to the YouTube recordings of recent talks (https://sciencecircle.org/).  I have also posted content from my talks at http://dpa-llc.com/chemjs , including links to the source material, and software used to create the objects. I am grateful to dpa-llc for hosting this content, to which other educators are welcome to link to.

The exhibits in this area highlight how atomic and molecular orbitals influence observed chemistry, and provide examples of how experimentally-determined structures can be easily translated into accurate models in virtual worlds.  Most of the exhibits are labelled and will give you a notecard with more details when you click on them.

More on Net Neutrality: Over 200 Businesses Sign Letter of Support, Philip Rosedale Predicts "Especially Negative" Consequences

By Bixyl Shuftan

Earlier, the Newser wrote about the plans of the FCC Chairman Ajit Pai to dismantle regulations protecting Net Neutrality. To the ordinary Internet user, it may seem like a David and Goliath style struggle of thousands of little guys like him versus huge corporations. As it turns out, the little guys have some big guys on their side. On November 27, also known as "Cyber Monday," one of the biggest days of shopping online in the year, over 200 online businesses and trade groups signed their names to a letter to the FCC asking them to scrap Pai's call to end Net Neutrality protections. Among those on the list were Pinterest, Reddit, Tumbir, Twitter, and Vimeo.

Because of the open internet, a web developer can launch a business out of their own apartment, an aspiring fashion designer in Wyoming can sell clothes in Los Angeles, or a caterer can find new customers in their town. Because of net neutrality, consumers and businesses have unfettered access to one another, increasing competition and consumer choice.

Without these rules, internet service providers will be able to favor certain websites and e-businesses, or the platforms they use to garner new customers, over others by putting the ones that can pay in fast lanes and slowing down or even blocking others. Businesses may have to pay a toll just to reach customers. This would put small and medium-sized businesses at a disadvantage and prevent innovative new ones from even getting off the ground. An internet without net neutrality protections would be the opposite of the open market, with a few powerful cable and phone companies picking winners and losers instead of consumers.

And what would the repeal of Net Neutrality mean for Second Life? According to Philip Rosedale, the founder of Linden Lab, it would be very bad. In a post on Twitter, Rosedale reminded everyone that for many users of the Internet, where they live there's only one Internet provider, especially for high-speed Internet.

Many Americans have only one internet provider. Removing the requirement for net neutrality would allow their opinions to be biased by the provider. Unbiased information will become a privilege of the rich. This is against everything we stand for as a country.

Talking to Hamlet Au of New World Notes, Rosedale explained more, "The end of net neutrality would be especially negative for high bandwidth services like SL and High Fidelity that are delivered by less powerful companies. I would not be surprised to see providers with no competition simply re-introduce by-the-megabyte billing for 'non-premium' services, taking us all the way back to the stone age of AOL and other early online services."

Second Life can be quite a "bandwith hog," to quote the starter of a 2007 thread from the SL Universe forums in which one person stated his Internet plan's bandwidth allowance for a month only covered slightly more than three days of use. With this in mind, it's fair to say the end of Net Neutrality would strongly affect a number of core residents. For users who spend a lot of time here whose Internet provider ends up putting a strict bandwidth limit with high charges for going over,  this would mean paying more, perhaps significantly more, for a higher level of use, or severely cutting their time here.

On another note, an article by the Washington Post reported that "hundreds of thousands" of emails to the FCC about Net Neutrality were likely fake. An article in Hackernoon stated that there were more than a million fake messages to them calling for the repeal of Net Neutrality, concluding that only three to four percent of the total of comments they had received were probably real.

Table For Fifteen at Rocket City

Since the closing of it's noted mall a few years ago, I hadn't heard much from the Rocket City sim. But my neighbor Rua Whitepaw recently IMed me about something going on there. Sending my alt Rezzdammit over, I saw they were trying to get as many people as they could to sit on a single table. As getting more than one on a chair or more than a few on a couch usually can't be done, how they were able to get a dozen avatars on it was a surprise. Last I saw, they had gotten fifteen people on it.

Reader Submitted: Mourning in Second Life

We enjoy being with friends and family. But unfortunately, accidents and illnesses can happen, and eventually there comes a day for each of us when we pass away. In real life, there are obituaries announcing the person's death, funerals to go to, and usually a lasting place for the deceased. Online however, often the only sign something is wrong is our friend suddenly stops coming on. And if we do get word, what is to be done? For those in Second Life in which people are free to build what they want to on their lands, there are those who chose to make places to honor those lost. Alura Messing recently sent a reader submission on the subject, describing her personal experience, and three places in Second Life where those whom have departed have a place where their names remain.

News and Commentary: Net Neutrality at Risk

The issue of "Net Neutrality," the idea that Internet Service Providers treat all data the same and not intentionally restrict it for the purpose of making money, came into the news recently when Chairman Ajit Pai of the Federal Communications Commission released a plan that calls for the dismantling of laws protecting it. Pai called current laws "heavy-handed Internet regulations." But the response has been a number of protests from ordinary Americans to columnists and more. Among them is Mark Fischback, better known as "Markiplier." Usually, he does gaming review videos. But he did one asking people to move to protect Net Neutrality.

It's difficult to see how the end of Net Neutrality would help anyone but the big telecom industries, who would then be able to choke people's Internet access in order to make more money to themselves. They could deliberately slow access to all but designated "fast lanes" that they would charge more for. They could deny access to certain platforms, such as Skype and Discord, in order to steer people to using their own. They could slow down, or even deny access to certain games and websites.

Looking back, there is evidence they would do just that. In 2011, MetroPCS moved to charge different rates for Internet access. In 2012, AT&T moved to block Apple's application Facetime from it's users who didn't pay for an expensive plan. In 2013, Verizon went to court to repeal Net Neutrality regulations at the time, saying they had the right to treat traffic unevenly.

This is more than just slowing down movie and video downloads and making some online first person shooters unplayable to certain users. The free flow of data that Internet Neutrality provides allows for small online businesses and entrepreneurs to start up easier while a "throttled" Internet could choke off these new companies before they start.

What to do? One can write their Congressman and/or Senator. There are also petitions one can sign, sign as the one at petitions.whitehouse.gov/, and change.org.

Hopefully, the proposed dismantling will itself be dismantled.

Meanwhile, Back in Rust

It's been almost a year since I last wrote anything about the survival MMO game Rust. There's been a few changes in the game since then. There are new locations like abandoned supermarkets and gas stations. Characters have hair now. Blueprints are back, and they're needed in order to be able to build certain items. There's a new weapon: the railgun. Binoculars have been introduced. How resources are gathered has changed a little, starting off small for the first few wacks, and getting plenty at the end.

And going about, I happened to notice this sign which I hadn't seen before, referencing a familiar enemy to anyone who's played the game. Guess one can't say the developers have no sense of humor.

Flooding At The Happy Vixen, Club Zero Gravity

On Sunday November 19, the Happy Vixen beach club in the Purrfection Estates sim experienced some flooding. One moment the water was normal. The next, waves were coming over the dance floor. And soon the dancers were waist-deep in churning surf. But a few minutes later, the waters receded, and all was as before.

The previous day at Club Zero Gravity, a malfunction resulted in similar flooding in the space station. But somehow the water turned a shade of orange, then green. Geerkil Ziskey, whom was the DJ at the time, got up on the ceiling's gravity platform. After a few jokes about where the water might have come from, eventually someone turned on the drainage. And minutes later, the deck was dry again.

Two rare times when the situation at these two clubs was all wet.

Resident from Puerto Rico Back Online Two Months After Hurricane

Everyone on the Internet has had to content with power outages. For most in the United States, they seldom last more than a few hours. After a hurricane or other major storm system, power can be out for up to a week or two if there's a lot of damage. But one American territory, the island of Puerto Rico, suffered a devastating hit by Hurricane Maria in September and almost the entire power grid went down, with predictions some places would be without electricity and Internet for many months. A few days ago, one Second Life resident from the island finally came back online after two months. She had quite a story to tell.

Reader Submission: Proyecto Latino, New and Innovative.

Just opened three months ago and is already a point of reference for many Spanish speakers, Project Latino is innovative and willing for all those who come to enjoy the facilities and the variety of services that this place offers. It's a commercial area with a diversity of stores focused on kemono fashion, an area of free items such as can not be missing today in most social areas.

Among other things this site has locker rooms, a site aimed at dictating classes, and a cinema where movies are designed daily in a very good quality and in a very familiar environment with the only requirement to be users of the Firestorm Viewer. A very pleasant experience.

And what makes this site different from other sites and Spanish-speaking places to socialize? Shiroe NignTяoad (f1729) stated, "Personally I like to create spaces that give the same experience as real life." That's what makes this place different, says one of the administrators of this great place.

“Vision for Education in Virtual Worlds” by Enrique Cachafeiro.

Education in Virtual Worlds has seemed to stall as of late. The promise of virtual reality as a means of revolutionizing education has halted at novelty. What will it take to legitimize and penetrate the technology into the field of education? Here is one design, one roadmap for disrupting the paradigm using what is still the most powerful tool for education – virtual worlds.
