Return to Yosemite

Almost a year ago, Gemma Cleanslate wrote about Yosemite, a park area owned and built by Jadyn Firehawk with some artistic structures among the trees and trails. Since then, there have been a few changes at the place. She went back and had a look at them. So what are these changes?

Among the other events going on, the Relay for Life Fourth Annual Farshore Field Air Show took place in Pacific Waters on Saturday May 20, the RFL Home and Garden Expo opened on Friday May 19, and more.

Lantern Release Ceremony At The RFL Home And Garden Expo

The Home and Garden Expo is taking place in Second Life. Among the events there is the Lantern Release Ceremony. It takes place every day at 4PM at the Hope 5 sim. At the start of the event virtual replicas of Asian lanterns are released into the air, in remembrance of friends and loved ones whom have been lost.

Saffia Widdershins, who invited me to the event, told me, "These lanterns were created especially for the Home and Garden Expo about seven years ago, by Alchemy Immortalis. We started the tradition of releasing them then, and ever since, every day at Expo, we have the lantern release ceremony."

The ceremony ends with a sunrise, a reminder that tomorrow is another day, and of new beginnings.

For more on the ceremony, check the RFL Home and Expo blog. To head to the Expo, head to .

Reminder: Sunbeamer Air Show and Bay City Anniversary

There's two big events this weekend in Second Life. On Saturday is the Fourth Annual Farshore Field Air Show Fly-in at the Pacific Waters sim. This Relay event is a must for airplane fans. Among the attractions, a dunking booth in which instead of tennis balls, you fire a German 88 to knock volunteers into the water. Launch yourself, or your friends, out of an air cannon. Bring your own warplanes and duke it out in a dogfight. Or just use the plane rezzer (above) and use those. Jessicabelle Dayafter recently installed a new and improved one with two more planes.

The event takes place Saturday from 8AM to 4PM at Pacific Waters (51/86/31) For more information, contact Cynthia Farshore.

Sunday's big event is the Ninth Annual Bay City Anniversary. Starting off with a parade, the line of people heads to the North Channel sim where the party begins, with both DJs and live music. For questions, contact Marianne McCann.

More On Ozimal's Closing

There's been a few developments following the closing of Ozimals. I found the real Ozimal store at the Magic of Oz sim (180/90/23), but sadly anything having to do with their breedable bunnies or any other products of theirs was gone. There are still other items one can buy at shops, and one can explore the sim, going down it's yellow brick road and seeing Emerald City. It is unclear how long the sim will remain. The Ozimal blog has also been shut down.

Contacting Malkavyn Eldritch, he told me he couldn't tell me any details at all related to the "cease and desist" order other than what he already stated. But he did say there was a group concerned fans of Ozimal bunnies could join: For The Love of Oz . Chatting with the people there, I was handed a package with an "Everlasting timepiece" and other items needed to keep a pet bunny active, even one that had gone into hibernation. So if someone gets the news late about Ozimal's closing, they can still save their bunnies. You can also get the items from IMing the group and getting them from someone, or from the box of them at the Newser office at HV Community (135/85/25)

Fans of Ozimal have also set up a gofundme page, not to help bring back the company (which is unlikely), but to help out Malkavyn. "The funds we raise here will go toward helping him rebuild things in his life beyond Second Life and hopefully ease his real life burdens," the page states, "Please help us give back to him for all the joy that he has brought us."

In group notices, people were still trading bunnies, and there was plenty of chat about their pets and happy moments. So while the company may be gone, many bunny owners will still be enjoying their pets.

Recently while the Relaystock in Second Life was going on, Deaflegacy met up with one of the most well known DJs taking part: Trader Whiplash. Trader has a long history with the Relay, known for both his DJing and radio station, and his "Bid Me Bald" events. Deaflegacy had a few questions for him, and he took some time to answer.

"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" Ozimal Bunnies Closes Due to "Cease And Desist" Order

After seven years, Ozimals has closed it's doors.

The news came suddenly yesterday on Tuesday May 16 when Malkavyn Eldritch posted on the Ozimals blog that the day before, she had been hit with a "cease and desist" order from a lawyer representing an Edward Distelhurst of Akimeta Ltd, "This letter demands that I cease all use of Ozimals intellectual property." Sadly, she made the conclusion they had no choice but to comply.

I don’t personally agree with this claim, but I do not have the means to fight this in court, therefore I have no choice but to comply. As of the morning of Wednesday, May 17, 2017, my products and their associated games will cease to function.
This really f***ing sucks, and I’m sorry. It was never my intention for the time we’ve all spent with the bunnies and the Pufflings to end like this. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of the support this community has given me over the last seven years. I wish there was more I could say.

For those looking at two of the last pictures on her Flickr page, they found that if they could get to the Ozimal store in time. they could get "free eternal timepieces and other goodies" that would keep their pets active. Otherwise "Any bunny who is not Everlasing will be unable to eat and will hibernate within 72 hours." Those bunnies that were "Everlasting" would go on. Getting to the store at slightly after Midnight SL time, the store, and the means to preserve unprotected pets, were gone.

Who is Akimeta? A search let to a blog by "Akimeta Metaverse Development Services," in which they listed Ozimal bunnies as one of their collaboration projects, "Work for Ozimals LLC began in June or July of 2009 and through the course of my time creating the bulk of visual assets used by the company some ~2000 files were created, culminating in over 600 individual visual assets now used in the widely popular game." It seems their partnership has ended under less than cordial circumstances.

Ozimals came onto Second Life in 2010. While they were not the first breedable pets in Second Life, they were a breakthrough as they were hardier than the fragile Sion chickens and "the first breedable pet company in Second Life to use a sophisticated system based on dominant and recessive genetics instead of RGB color values as the previous popular breeding pet games." For a time, they were wildly popular, some rare breeds selling for tens of thousands of Lindens at auctions. They even made a marketing deal with Linden Lab.  But the bunny craze soon faded. Shellie Sands thought that the market had become saturated, and when people kept on selling as people wanted to get rid of bunnies they could no longer afford to feed, the price plummeted.

Shortly afterwards, Ozimals filed suit against Amaretto horses, the next popular breedable, saying they had copied sections of their scripts. But after some time, the judge ruled in favor of Amaretto. More breedables entered the market, from dogs to cats and many others. But the Ozimal bunny had a place in Second Life history. And now years after the lawsuit, ironically but sadly the bunnies have met their end due to another suit.

Goodbye, Ozimals, you brought joy and happiness to the grid for years, and I wish some of that will follow the people who kept the bunlife going.

Addition: The Ozimal blog seems to have been taken down, so here is a screenshot of the last entry.

For a donation you enter and are given for free a bicycle blimp you pedal through a series of rings above the ground. "Unprecedented" Cyberattack Hits Thousands of Computers In 99 Countries

A massive cyberattack has hit at least 75,000 computers in 99 countries in the past few days. Described as "unprecedented" in scale, the attacks have been infecting both individuals and institutions from home computers to government agencies to businesses to hospitals. In Great Britian alone, at least 48 hospitals, clinics, and other health institutions were affected. Although some surgeries were postponed, there are no reports of deaths yet related to the hacking.

Reports of the malware, called "WannaCry" began coming in on Friday. What happens io infected computers is the files are locked and a picture appears on the screen demanding $300 US dollars worth of Bitcoin within three days for the key to unlock the computer. Unlike typical malware attacks that rely on tricking computer users into opening email attachments or clicking on links, WannaCry is a worm that attacks computers through active online connections through vulnerabilities in system software. WannaCry locks up files, looks for other vulnerable computers to infect, then deletes itself. Most computer experts recommend treating the files as lost, with only the backup files on external hard drives, if any, as recoverable. It is not recommended that people pay the criminals as in past cases of ransomware, the criminals almost never provided any key to recover lost files. It is believed that the reason Bitcoin is the method of payment demanded is because it's transactions can't be traced.

In an ironic twist, the worm may be based on a spyware tool created by the NSA to snoop on people's computers, designed to take advantages of vulnerabilities in Windows software that it had discovered. The program was leaked in April by computer hackers whom had discovered it. The agency will neither confirm or deny their program had anything to do with WannaCry. A lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union called this "deeply troubling," saying the NSA should have notified Microsoft of the vulnerabilities instead of taking advantage of them, "These attacks underscore the fact that vulnerabilities will be exploited not just by our security agencies, but by hackers and criminals around the world. Patching security holes immediately, not stockpiling them, is the best way to make everyone's digital life safer." Others put the blame less on the NSA and more on institutions for being too slow to update systems, the attack happening two months after Microsoft had a patch available.

One British computer security blogger halted one strain of the malware by accident. Known as "Malware Tech," he decided to investigate the attack, and after an all-night session noticed the strain was trying to contact a specific web address every time it infected a new system. Seeing it was unregistered, he bought it for eight Pounds ($10.69 USD) to see where the attacks were happening. But in doing se, he accidentally triggered a "kill switch" for the strain. But there are still other strains of the worm out there.

A reminder that the computer world is full of dangers.

Steelhead Update

By Bixyl Shuftan

For the past few weeks for the Steelhead community. their new home of Steelhead Bay has continued to develop, with homes, shops, and other buildings such as a church, observatory, and greenhouse tea garden, and of course the theater earlier mentioned. Beside the theater is the side of a small mountain. Residents have continued to move in. But there are still empty spaces, and at least one house was marked "For Rent," so there is still room for people to move in.

In their town hall meeting on May 9, Fuzzball brought up a few things, saying Totallunar Eclipse and  Tensai Hilra, the owners of the old Steelhead sims, "are still part of Steelhead, but requested not to be doing any managerial type duties. So, they're just (ir)regular Steelheaders. Since we only have the one sim, I think Jimmy (Branagh) and I can handle the duties." Fuzzball also told those present that he and Willow Leafstorm were talking about possibly getting a water homestead sim between Steelhead Bay and Ravenwood Forest (formerly Steelhead Nevermoor).

Fuzzball also announced he would volunteer to put his dignity on the line to help raise funds for the Steelhead Salmons Relay for Life team, "For every 3000 lindens that kiosk raises, I walk a lap on the RFL track in a Luminous Design dress. So far, it's one lap." His audience chuckled, one saying, "I could probably scrape up another 3k but it would nearly break me. Totally worth it." Fuzzball told them, "The Fuzz In A Dress Kiosk is inside Gearz, with a pic of me in said outfit." As of the writing of this article, the Steelhead Salmons have raised a little over 99,500 Lindens, almost a hundred thousand.

On another note, our last report stated there were sightings of a "sea monster" in the waters of Steelhead Bay. Checking things out for myself, I didn't see anything resembling the supposed denizen of Loch Ness. But there was one unusual sight: a narwhal. What this creature was doing so far away from it's home waters, one can only guess. But given it's unusual appearance, perhaps this was the cause of the sea monster stories.

Commentary: Support Open Internet Rules: Net Neutrality and What It Means

By Lanai Jarrico

On April 26th, 2017, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced a plan to undo the 2015 rules that implemented net neutrality by reclassify internet service providers as common carriers and reversing Title II of the Communications Act of 1934 in favor of paid prioritizing.

This plan will be voted on by the FCC - May 18, 2017.

What is Title II & Net Neutrality?
Net Neutrality is essentially the pipeline via the internet, meaning your cable internet, LTE wireless (phone) internet or however you are receiving information via the internet.
Internet providers are not allowed to arbitrarily choose favorites in terms of the content that you consume.  For example, if you like to use a particular search engine and your roommate or family members’ likes to use others competing search engines.  A search engine they use could have the power to pay your internet service provider to choose what you use.
Internet companies should not have the right to pay your internet provider to slow down their competitor search engines and choose which ones run faster.

Title II net neutrality prevents Internet Service providers (ISPs) from limiting or manipulating the choices you make online. It also creates a level playing field so that larger companies cannot undermine small companies before they can grow and expand.

What does it mean for internet users like you if internet neutrality is not enforced?
It means that you basically will have no control over your internet due to your provider choosing favorites because they are getting paid more by one competitor over another. For example in terms of a virtual world resident, if you like gaming on your favorite platform *coughs* Second Life *cough* and another virtual platform that may not offer the same options you like pays your provider more. It will slow down (LAG) your choice and give faster service via an internet fast lanes on the other competing platform. *GASPS*

If it matters to you to have open internet freedom, the FCC is taking public comments and will write rules to either reinstate open internet or damage our internet freedom.

Go to and be part of restoring internet freedom and the unfair targeting of small starts ups. It is a direct link to the FCC proceedings page. Under 17-108 “Restoring Internet Freedom”, select express and fill out the form.
Comment directly to Ajit Pai, the chairman of the FCC that you specifically support strong net neutrality backed by Title II oversight of Internet service providers.

Everyone who has a following such as a blog, social media outlet or any other way to spread the word should get involved in this movement and share this post!!

May 18th is fast approaching!

To everyone who believes in and participates in net neutrality, thank you for supporting open internet freedom.

Second Life Enquirer Turns 12

A couple days ago on May 9, The publication Second Life Enquirer celebrated their twelfth anniversary. It was also the rezzday of it's founder and owner Lanai Jarrico. Having gotten her start in the now closed "The Sims Online" virtual world, she came to Second Life to write about goings on here. In a 2015 interview, she described her paper as being more entertainment-oriented while the Newser was more news-focused.

Rather than being the arch-rivals the SL Herald and the SL Newspaper were, the two publications have more or less cooperated, such as when Lanai requested that yours truly take a picture of her at a 2014 jail and bail and let me make a cartoon out of it, and today's article on Net Neutrality being on the line.

No doubt she and her writers will be continuing for a while.

Happy Anniversary SL Enquirer

Reader Submitted: Luskwood at Second Life Birthdays Past

Recently Michi Lumin, one of the founders of the Luskwood community, sent in a few pictures she and two others, Codex Rau and Eo Fenstalker, took of their exhibits in previous Second Life Birthday celebrations. This one by Codex from SL5B in 2008 shows a sign reminding everyone that visitors to the community are very much welcome.

Michi herself took this one of their SL6B exhibit in 2009.

Eo had a picture of the outside of Lusk's SL7B exhibit in 2010.

Luskwood hasn't had any exhibits at the Second Life Birthday celebration in the past few years. Could they be coming back this year?

Cartoon of the Day

Taken at the Fantasy Faire pool party. Guys are always talking about landing a "foxy girl." But looks like this vixen isn't going for it.

Reader Submitted: Cinco De Mayo in Second Life

In the past, Any1 Gynoid had written for the Newser, as well as CNN iReports. While she has left the paper, she occasionally keeps in touch with us. She recently sent us a submission about a party she had went to recently: Cinco De Mayo. While many of us north of the border have "Cinco De Mayo" parties in bars and other places around the fifth of May, just exactly what is the holiday? And as it turns out, the day is also celebrated on the other side of the Atlantic, but for another reason.

News and Commentary: Sansar Update: Plans For Release Date, Minimum Requirements, Allegation of Content Theft

By Bixyl Shuftan

A few developments about Sansar have come up in recent days. One is an answer from it's developers via Twitter when asked about when it would be ready for release. The answer was, "Plan is this summer, specific date (to be announced)." This is a little different from when in interview last month Ebbe Linden stated they would release Sansar this Summer. Now, they say their plan is to release it this Summer, but can't give a specific date. Another sign that the development of Sansar is seeing more difficulties than anticipated.

Another development was when the developers, also on Twitter, answered a question about Sansar's requirements. What the minimum requirements were, they stated they couldn't say what they would be, but "current recommendation is aligned to Oculus/Vive specs."

Taking a look at, there was the following minimum specs:

Graphics Card    NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti / AMD Radeon RX 470 or greater
Alternative Graphics Card    NVIDIA GTX 960 4GB / AMD Radeon R9 290 or greater
CPU    Intel i3-6100 / AMD FX4350 or greater
Memory    8GB+ RAM
Video Output    Compatible HDMI 1.3 video output
USB Ports    1x USB 3.0 port, plus 2x USB 2.0 ports
OS    Windows 8.1 or newer

On, these were the minimum specs posted:

Processor: Intel™ Core™ i5-4590 or AMD FX™ 8350, equivalent or better
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce™ GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon™ RX 480, equivalent or better.
Memory: 4 GB RAM or more
Video output: 1x HDMI 1.4 port, or DisplayPort 1.2 or newer
USB: 1x USB 2.0 port or newer
Operating system: Windows™ 7 SP1, Windows™ 8.1 or later or Windows™ 10

Hamlet Au, who also wrote about the recommendations, summed it up by saying "so basically, if you're not a hardcore PC gamer already, you're probably not ready to jump into Sansar when it Alpha launches ..." In the comments following the article, Ckara Seller commented, "when I did a quick check on upgrading prices to meet specs on Occulus and Vive I was coming up with numbers ranging from $2500 to $5000 depending on how much you need and want. I'd say that most people will need a new system if they are going to meet specs for processor alone. There's the cost of the VR equipment, a powerful graphics card, power supply and the required USB ports. It makes no sense to spend a hefty minimum to upgrade to minimum when you know it's inevitable that minimum will be a dinosaur within months. So my amateur take is that you will need to spend a few thousand to get what you need to carry you for awhile. It's going to hurt your wallet like a bad trip to the dentist. Calling for financial pain is where Sansar is going to begin their introduction to new customers. ... I think this message is so untimely and they all know it. ...."

It's looking less and less like Sansar will be the highly successful product Linden Lab hoped it would be.

Also in the comments was what might be the first accusation of content theft in Sansar. Someone found what he identified as a BonHuit cottage from M and M Creations. If the name seems familiar to longtime Newser readers, it should. M&M Creations, owned by Marcthur and 10 Goosson, was one of the main longtime sponsors of Second Life Newspaper, the predecessor newsletter of the Second Life Newser and has bought some advertising time in the past. In the past, they had an inworld mall and at one time offered building lessons. Sadly real-life troubles have caused them to scale back on their activities. But they do offer some great products.

I messaged Marcthur, and eventually got an answer. The owner of the cottage did buy it from him, and does have permission to use it in Sansar. So apparently there was no content theft after all. This is a reminder though that Linden Lab will need to police it's new grind for real cases of stealing.
