Luskwood, considered Second Life's best known furry community and one of it's oldest, is having it's anniversary celebration, the LW14B, tomorrow, Saturday October 21. The event, which goes alongside it's sister community Trotsdale's anniversary, looks like it has a conspiracy/secrecy theme, if one goes by it's inworld group announcement and blog post.
SECRET//SCI-TK//COMINT//REL TO SL THIS IS A FALSE FLAG OPERATION.
A vast coverup will begin at 4pm on October 21, Saturday. Luskwood's 14th year coincides with Trotsdale's 6th. Bring enough groceries, some peanut butter, to last a couple of days
The schedule, and event monkiers of the performers, was listed as
The largest and longest running yearly art and music festival, Burn2, will be starting tomorrow. Originally called Burning Life, Burn2 is the inworld version of the Burning Man festival that takes place every year in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. It's notable that while coming up with Second Life, members of the early Linden Lab attended Burning Man, and the event was a partial inspiration for the virtual world's development. In recent years, the popularity of the event has resulted in smaller spinnoff events throughout the year, though the "Octoburn" as it's come to be called remains the main one.
This year's festival will take place from Saturday October 21 to Sunday October 29. The theme, which always reflects the real-life Burning Man, will be "Radical Ritual." There are five sims of artistic exhibits and music events: Burning Man - Mirage, Burning Man - Limbo, Burning Man - Alkali, Burning Man - Black Rock, and Burning Man - Deep Hole.
Sadly, the real-life Burning Man festival was marked by tragedy this year when one man ran into the flames of the "Burning of The Man," and later died of his injuries. While no harm will come to your avatar in the virtual event, all visitors are asked to comply with the requests of the volunteer staff.
Abstract: For more than a decade, a cadre of visionary educators have
called upon new technologies to help educate excluded peoples around
the globe. This Science Circle session provides an update and
prognostications on societal need, technological breakthroughs, course
design, administrative challenges, faculty support, and – most
importantly – student access.

It's the time of year when Halloween is in the air, and one place that's having plenty of Halloween-themed fun is Furry Fashion. For the owner, Amethyst Crystal, it's her favorite time of year. She and her staff have a Halloween-themed area above the main mall, which one can not just explore for some frightful fun, but also do a Halloween hunt and get some free items.
Shockwave Yareach's "Alien Egg Hunt" is back. In the past, it was a twisted take on an Easter egg hunt. But it fits in fine with Halloween. Players take on the role of someone searching the spaceship "Nostromo" for alien eggs and creatures. To play the game, you need a HUD, which can be picked up at the maze's start, and a gun that can function in the game. You can buy the one at the start for ten Lindens, or use your own. For the later, test it on the display egg to make sure it works.
Since writing earlier about a few Halloween-themed places on the Grid, Gemma Cleanslate has continued her explorations. She has found more scary locations, and here's her article on this additional "spook-tacular" fun.
The "Quest Fur Cover" event is open, a twice a year event organized by Furry Fashion and Squishy Fluff, and the first stop of the event is the Furry Fashion mall. The item the store says to look for: "Voodoo Kitty Plushies."
"Some stores may not be 100% ready yet plus check the blog if unsure!"
Sunday night was the end of the "Tail Sale," or date auction, being held at Club Zero Gravity. From 6-8PM SL time, the crowd danced as the final bids on the volunteers were made (due to that it was an "Undies" event, no pictures are being published). The auction netted a total of 15,422 Linden dollars , half of which went to the ladies. The highest bid on was Brandi Streusel, whose high bid was 6070 Lindens.
Thank you to all those that put themselves up for Auction. We grossed $15,422Ls. Out of that the club earned $7711L's.
Some of you have gone on the rides of the various amusement parks, some temporary for special events, some lasting, around Second Life. But who builds the rides? One fan of these rides, Nance Clowes, recently introduced me to Celeste Cazenove. Celeste has been making these kinds of rides for quite some time, and is continuing to design and build them.
Join in the fun events throughout the month, including:
Think Pink Thursdays: Wear pink and come join the fun from 4 to 6 p.m. SLT as DJ Noel Snowpaw plays the tunes.
Dance teams from across Second Life will perform 2 shows: 6 p.m SLT, Saturday, Oct. 14 and 1 p.m. SLT, Sunday, Oct. 15.

Survivors & Caregivers Gala from 1 to 5 p.m.Saturday, Oct. 28
And, if anyone would like to hold an event but needs a venue, we have an event area on the Strides sim. Reservations for use are first come, first serve. To reserve a spot they should contact Leala Spire, Sandie Loxingly or PrettyKitty Gumbo.
Hey, I’d like to help, is there anything I can do?
If you would like to help, you can:
Donate a One of A Kind Item for Auction at the Treasure the Chests Gala on Oct. 28.
Donate a small item to go into the walkers’ gift bags that they will be given after the Making Strides walk on Oct. 21.
Place a kiosk in your main store to accept donations from your customers. If you have a storefront and would like to donate a portion of your sales of a special item or if you would like to create a special item for the event to sale, with proceeds going to MSABC, you are welcome too!! Just drop your donation in the kiosk next to your shop or the kiosk at the Making Strides Office on American Cancer Society Island.
You may set items up on Marketplace with a split sell to donate and you can contact Leala or Sandie for more info on this.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer or MSABC is the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation, uniting more than 300 communities to finish the fight. Every breast cancer walk and event is an incredible and inspiring opportunity to honor those who have battled breast cancer, raise awareness about what we can do to reduce our breast cancer risk, and raise money to help the American Cancer Society fight the disease with research, information, services, and access to mammograms for women who need them.

The "Druken Parrot" pub, although it's been around for a while in Sunweaver Bay, has mostly been a visual attraction, making the Newser only once when it was the location of where to get the basket for an Easter Egg Hunt. But Sunweaver Chieftess Rita Mariner told me that the pub would be active for events once a week at Sundays from 4-6 AM. The floor in the dance area is small, but Rita says patrons are allowed to dance on the tables, preferably after having a virtual drink or two.
Although most of you probably know this already, I'd like to remind all: DO NOT ACCEPT GIFTS OR ITEMS FROM AVATARS YOU DON'T KNOW. There have been many scams going around the last few weeks where stranger avatars try to give seemingly attractive items away -- these are dangerous objects! They can often ask you for permissions to take lindens, or give control of your avatar to another. Others are griefing objects that will disrupt sims.
It's October, and time to give some Halloween-themed places in Second Life a visit. Gemma Cleanslate came across Carolyn Avro's "List of Haunted Places," and decided to check a few of them out. She visited Aldergrove, Mieville Shelley-Magnum, Palenia, Echoes, and a few places not on it, Sheado, Gotham Island, and Halloween Town. Read Gemma's review in Places.
The Happy Vixen beach club is getting ready for Halloween. Besides the darkness that has fallen onto the club (unless one sets their viewer to daylight), Jasmine Dawn, who made a special Halloween area in 2013 for Club Zero Gravity, has made a haunted pumpkin maze.
Highly suggested to be in mouselook while in the maze. Turn up your speaker volume for that good surround sound effect. And above all, have fun and enjoy the maze.
Going inside, it's a dark twisty maze full of not just wrong turns, but it looks like the carved insides of a pumpkin, and occasionally some "pumpkin guts" will be dangling down. There's also an occasional skeleton, zombie, and ghost in the maze, some still, some animated. While they can't grab you, it's still pretty unnerving to run smack into one after going around a corner.
Jasmine has also been working on another special Halloween area, which was first used last night for "The Vix's" Pokemon and Creepy vs Cute events. Accessible from the Happy Vixen, one crosses a spooky haunted woods to get to the main building, which is where the dances will be held for the rest of the month.
To head to the pumpkin maze, head to the Happy Vixen and look for the giant pumpkin. For the dance area, look for the doorway with multiple arrows.
For the third year in a row, Linden Lab will be organizing a "Creepy Crawl" event. Xiola Linden posted the details on the official Second Life blog.
you unafraid of things that go bump in the night? Love a screaming good
time with fellow Residents, and dressing up in your Halloween best?
Well, it is that time of year when once more - a-haunting we will go!
again, we’re going to monster mash-up our annual Creepy Crawl with some
de-frightfully fun Costume Contests - but we need your venues to host
our stops on the crawl. This year’s Creepy Crawl will happen on
Halloween ( Tuesday, October 31st) from 10 am - 2 pm (PT).
you’d like to host a stop along the Creepy Crawl, own a spot that will
be decked out for the holiday, and don’t mind if a parade of Residents
and Lindens come through, then you might be just what the witch doctor
ordered. We’re looking for spots that will have music, are appropriate
for general and moderate audiences, and can handle a crowd.
For those who don't know, the event gets it's name from the term "bar crawl," in which a group of people go to a bunch of bars in a night, spending a little time (and money) in one before heading on to the next.
For those interested in having their venue up, to begin with they need to be listed in the Destination Guide.(for those who don't know how, you can find out here). To register for the crawl, click here and fill out the form before October 15. The Lab says to keep an eye out for either an email, a notecard, or both, and that not all of those who apply will be chosen.
Xiola says details of the Crawl's costume contest, and it's schedule will be posted soon, presumably between the 15th and Halloween.
“Gravitational Waves: The 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics” Presented by Rob Knop Ph. D, USA
The 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to leaders of the LIGO collaboration
for the discovery of gravitational waves. This phenomena was predicted
a century ago by General Relativity, but it was always known that
because they’re typically so small, they would be very hard to detect.
Indirect evidence for them previously came
from the decaying orbits of binary pulsars. In 2015, the LIGO detectors
announced the first direct detection of gravitational waves, a signal
resulting from the merger of two very distant black holes.
In this talk, I’ll describe the nature and
history of gravitational waves, and the work that the large LIGO
collaboration did to earn this Nobel prize.
Saturday October 7 was the day of the Newser's monthly crew meeting. Deaflegacy, Klaus Bereznyak, and Foxythejamie were there, along with a couple neighbors, ShadowRene Ivanova, and Rua Whitepaw, to discuss events and places to report on this month.
At one point, Foxythejamie brought up he had a maid outfit, and changed to it. Guess one could call it a "maid to order" situation.

We often think of computer gamers as immature loners, and when they do find someone and get married, what comes to mind is the game being a source of friction between a computer-free wife and game-addicted husband. But there are couples whom happily game together. Recently however, one such gamer has had to deal with the grief and lost as his wife, whom played "World of Warcraft" with him for years, had passed away. Feeling some of her friends would wonder why she was gone, he posted his feelings on the Blizzard forums. He didn't expect the outpouring of sympathy that followed.
Late last month, noted content creator Maxwell Graf sent out a plea for help saying he and his wife were facing an eviction, and with no savings was asking people to come to his store and buy an item or two so he could have more cash. Very quickly, people began organizing a shopping fundraiser to help him out more.
There were many stores involved in the event taking place in the Apple Fall sim. By Friday October 6, 250,000 Lindens had been raised. When the event finally ended yesterday on October 10, it had reached the one million mark.
Thank you - we did it! The ForMax Event has come to a close.
I am literally shaking as I write this, as the level of love, help and
generosity of the Second Life Community has shown us what true spirit
means. The amount raised has topped across the donations/raffle and
creator items over 1,000,000 Linden. This hopefully gives our Max a
safety net for the short term so he and his family can start to plan
their new chapter. A list of all sales is already available to Max for audit (locked script) and donations/raffle in addition.
You did an amazing thing for a Man who has helped so many himself, and
you all made a difference this week. Thank you. Thank you.
There was also a raffle held, which was won by JessyWildCat Resident. with Zero1112 Resident and CrazyandSweet Resident as second and third place finishers.
Those still interested in dropping by the event area to purchase an item can head to Apple Fall (128/133/29), at least as long as the stalls remain. More information can be read in the event's Facebook page.
From November last year to May, the map when over the Raglan Shire tiny community would often show one of a number of funny images. They were put on hold during the Artwalk, and never did resume, at least until now. But the sign is not so much funny as to point out the place is ready for Halloween, "Welcome to Raglan Scare."
Taking a look, Raglan Shire itself now had a spooky atmosphere, ready for their "Shocktober" event, which boasts a haunted house and dragon maze. Those rascally tinies tend to go for humor and a simple "boo!" rather than freak out visitors with blood and guts, so one can be sure to find a family safe Halloween experience here.
It is an honor once again to announce our Second Life Homes For Our Troops donations for September 2017. We were able to collect a little over $550 for Homes For Our Troops in Second Life during the month of September. This was once again made possible because of some special people in Second Life.

Thank you Second Life for a making a difference in our wounded veteran lives!
As Furry Fashion gets ready for Halloween, a dark shadow has fallen over their celebratory mood. Not from their themed exhibits, but from one of the team, Luna Pawpad, expelled from Second Life by Linden Lab. No reason was given other than an undefined "violation of the terms of service." Talking to her, she says the cause might have been her Mother giving her money from her credit card in the past, but she thought that matter was cleared up with the Lab months ago. She has appealed to Linden Lab, but they have refused to listen to her. Friends of hers have come forward, saying the ban was not deserved, and the message the Lab is sending is not to behave, but that thousands of hours and dollars invested here can be gone in an instant.
Klaus Bereznyak recently heard about an event in Second Life that got his attention. Held in the sim of Le Sixieme Sens, it's partially a shopping event, but there's no fee for any designers taking part. The other part is a photography contest. The sim in itself also offers reasons to come visit, being well designed and picturesque.
There's a "Tail Sale" going on at Club Zero Gravity. For those of you not familar with them, it's the name usually given to date auctions (or bachelor/bachelorette auctions) in furry areas. This time, five women are putting themselves on the line offering a date, and sometimes the option of something else such as building something. They are Brandi Streusel, Dusk Griswold, Megami Yuzuki, Skylark Lefavre (Snowy Sugar Blossom), and Nydia Tungsten.
The bids have already started. Those interested have until October 15 to place their bids.
In real life, a field of crosses was set up to honor those the killer mowed down. Here in Second Life, a candle for the fallen was placed at the Happy Vixen club. I decided to look for other displays before posting about it, but while there must be some out there in Second Life, I have yet to hear the location of any other. If you the readers know of others, please let us at the Newser know.
Those of you whom have been around the days of browsing the Internet and the World Wide Web since the beginning will remember America On-Line's AOL Instant Messenger. Also known simply as AIM, it helped pioneer the days of social media, people using the Internet and being online to get in touch and chat with one another instead of simply looking up information and checking email. But like many other pioneers in technology, it became outclassed by later products. It was announced earlier this month by the VP of Communications of Oath, the company created by the merger of AOL and Yahoo, that AOL IM would be shutting down in December 2017 after 20 years of operation. If you were a 90’s kid, chances are there was a point in time when AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) was a huge part of your life. You likely remember the CD, your first screenname, your carefully curated away messages, and how you organized your buddy lists. Right now you might be reminiscing about how you had to compete for time on the home computer in order to chat with friends outside of school. You might also remember how characters throughout pop culture from “You’ve Got Mail” to “Sex and the City” used AIM to help navigate their relationships. In the late 1990’s, the world had never seen anything like it. And it captivated all of us.
AIM tapped into new digital technologies and ignited a cultural shift, but the way in which we communicate with each other has profoundly changed. As a result we’ve made the decision that we will be discontinuing AIM effective December 15, 2017. ... Thank you to all of our AIM users.
The announcement was made on Twitter and Tumbler, two newer messengers that helped displace AIM into irrelevance, and ended by promising to "continue building the next generation of iconic brands" and "provide more products and experiences."
And so, a peice of life on the early Internet is fading away into the history books.
It's been an active time in the Sunweaver Estates. Last weekend, the place got two new homestead sims, making for a total of ten sims in the main area of the Sunweaver/Angel sims (there are twelve overall). On top of two sims added in August and two sims changing hands, this has meant lots of changes. The Newser went around taking a few pictures and talking to a few people about the new sims and new looks. And the building and rebuilding isn't finished yet.
If you've been in Second Life for a while, you've seen avatars of all kinds. Some make an effort to stand out from the crowd. Others try to fit in. And then, there are those odd-looking avatars that look like the person didn't know how to design a look well. They're often newbies, though some are older. While often, these avatars are simply new, it's also the look favored by some griefers and trolls. When one such avatar found himself banned from a club before he took a few steps inside, he blogged about it. The result was a debate on just how should such avatars be treated.

One of the best known musicals is "CATS," composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber. First performed in 1981, it is the fourth longest running show on Broadway, and has been done on stages and theaters around the world and in twenty languages. Gemma Cleanslate heard about a performance here in Second Life at the Theater on the Hill, and went to see it.
